Super C Engine Vapor Lock?

In my garage is a 53 Super C. On most days, it fires up just fine with the pull rod. However, lately, there are times that it won't start (meaning no turn-over of the starter) AND we can't even get the crank to turn on the front. It is like it is completely locked up. We can, however, push it down the driveway and pop the clutch a couple of times. It doesn't start that way but then we can pull the rod and it will start. Does anyone know what is causing this or what we should do?
