I have a 1940 H that appears to be original paint, but the decals only say Mcormick and not Mcormick-deering and everything I read says up to 1943 should be Mcormick-Deering

Lots of tractors that either sat on dealer lots or were traded in got the new decals applied over the old ones at the time to "freshen" the look of the tractor. These "freshening" packages from the factory are differentiated by their red backgrounds instead of being clear, so as to hide the old decals. The earlier decals were plagued with fading problems too for a while, and the solution was to use the newer "freshening" decals there as well. If there are not two layers of decals on the hood, then it was repainted during the '50s by a dealer, or done later by someone else and the late decals were all that they could find at the time, or there was some damage or such that required replacement of the hood at a later date, which would have gotten the later decals as well. If this last is correct, the paint on the hood will not match the rest of the tractor in either shade or shine or possibly both. Other clues to look for to indicate a repaint are serial plates on starters, magnetos/distributors, and other factory no-paint items being painted over. The dealers and IH only stocked the current decal package, not all the different types, so if you came back later wanting one, you got what was current, there was no other choice but that or do without. McCormick-Deering was used until 1947, at which time it was changed to IH McCormick-Deering, and later dropping the Deering altogether in mid 1949, probably in July. Like most such changes, it occurred as old stock was used up and new came online. I base this on original research done in the McCormick archives by myself, mostly from original factory photos showing the tractors with year models designated on the photos. 1947 was the first year I found both type one and type two packages shown, but as yet I can find no other documentation to back this up. I have so far limited my research to the H only, but the '47 date does make sense as that was when the Super A was introduced, which would be a logical time to change the decal package on the tractors to differentiate the new model from the old. If this holds correct across all lines of the letter series, and I believe it does, it means that there should be no model A's or B's with the later decal package, with the possible exception of any 1947 models, as there were some made before the introduction of the Super A and the C. Hope all this helps.

And it only took two years!
(We won't discuss how much money, my wife might read this and I'm still too young to die!)
